A note on “mother”
Inclusion is at the heart of my offerings.
My approach to birth is gender inclusive and body affirming. You will notice that I alternate between the words “mother” and “gestating/birthing parent” in my writings. While I bear the title of mother, I understand that not all mothers hold the same identities as myself. I choose to utilize the definition of mother given by Lucy Jones in her book Matrescense:
“But of course, not all mothers are pregnant, or give birth, or are biologically related to their children. Nor is the work of mothering an exclusively female activity.”
As the holder of privileged identities, including heterosexual, cisgendered, white, & able-bodied, I am aware that my ascribed status means that my language matters and the words I choose are important.
I am always learning and evolving as an individual and a birthworker and am open to receiving input on this topic and any others that arise. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or general thoughts you’d like to share. The door is always open.
